Established in 2021, North Pier Angling is solely operated by me, Kevin Mitchell, and greatly influenced by the trusted support of accomplished co-anglers and loved ones. Originally from suburban Chicago, I came to New England for college in 2013; spending the almost-decade since combing and learning the gorgeous, complex waters of  western Massachusetts and southern New England.

Through a diapers-to-waders upbringing on the Lake Michigan coast, I sealed an un-severable, albeit frostbitten, bond to the great freshwater fisheries of the north. Originally taught by my dad, I was fortunate to be surrounded, educated and often humbled by a handful of not only skilled anglers, but also respected lifelong mentors. Growing up, I cut my teeth on the high seas of Lake Michigan, the unpredictable tributaries of the Great Lakes, the green-water rivers and lakes of the northern Midwest and spent most of my teenage years on the amateur bass circuit.

North Pier Angling itself is named after the pier of the same name in the beach town of South Haven, located on the west coast of Michigan. At its least, South Haven was my family’s deeply cherished summer escape; at its most, the tiny dunes town in many ways represents the spiritual foundation of my life as an angler. My dad and I filed a trove of vital memories fishing the often epic inshore runs of steelhead, kings, cohos and lake trout from the North Pier and filled the gaps between with seemingly endless hours of jumbo perching. After my dad died in 2012 following a ten-year battle with cancer, my family spread his ashes under the immortal green beacon of the North Pier Light. In his memory and in the memory of my grandparents—my family’s nucleus to South Haven and far beyond—our logo is emblazoned with the image of the North Pier Light.

The years in western Massachusetts that I have spent since have been a frenetic, jubilant and at times, frustrating, dash to not only quest after every bite from Cape Cod to Pulaski, but, even more, to further an increasingly well-rounded and deeply informed approach to angling. A great friend and co-angler of mine sums a central pillar of his fishing philosophy as, simply, ‘tools in the toolbox,’ meaning that the angler who constantly seeks new knowledge, technique and challenge will so often be the one to constantly expand the horizon of what is possible in this beautiful sport.

Flying, spinning, casting or center-pin: no matter how you like to fish—or what you like to fish for—North Pier Angling is here to connect you with a trip you’ll never forget; book with us today to continue adding to your toolbox.
